A Whole Other Story: The Musical

A Journey to the Stable, Reimagined — by Debbie DeRienzo

What it's about

Three high school friends meet up at a coffee shop over Christmas break. Devin has never really "done" church and doesn't know the Christmas story at all, so Lucy starts at the beginning. What follows moves back and forth between the teens' table and the story itself, as prophets, an angel, shepherds, wise men and a very put-upon set of innkeepers act out the journey to the stable.

It's the Nativity told the way one friend would actually explain it to another — funny, modern and unhurried, with musical numbers throughout.

Notes for parents

This is an explicitly Christian retelling of the Nativity, written for a family audience. The story follows Scripture closely — Isaiah's prophecy, the Annunciation, King Herod, the wise men and the birth itself — and several passages are quoted directly.

The teen characters speak in contemporary slang and the humor is gentle: a running joke about an absurd coffee order, some good-natured teasing, a cat with nine lives. There is no romance, no violence beyond the biblical account of Herod, and no language that would surprise a parent.

Roles range from several large speaking parts to a number of short ones, so there is room for a wide range of ages and experience levels.

A taste of it

LUCY: (enters from Stage Right) Hey, guys! Isn't it exciting? School is out for Christmas break and we are free! DEVIN: It's great! I can't wait to get my hands on all those cookies and candy canes. Last year, I made myself so sick. My teeth were stained red and green for a week! It was awesome! JORDAN: (rolling her eyes while texting) You are so weird! But you're right, there is so much to look forward to! Like sleeping and lounging and sleeping and relaxing… and sleeping.
